Why Donate?
You can change the course of a child’s life.
Help us help children with dyslexia learn to read and spell.
Dyslexia is the most common reading disability—affecting 15% – 20% of our population.
Children with unidentified, unaddressed dyslexia suffer academically, often hitting a “wall” in their reading development in 4th grade. Additionally, it is common for these children to suffer from headaches, stomachaches, bullying, bed wetting, and depression. Some of these children will develop behavior problems in school.
The most commonly shared characteristic among juvenile justice offenders is a reading disability (International Dyslexia Association).
Identification and early intervention can dramatically change the course of a child’s life.
However, California schools are rarely able to evaluate students specifically for dyslexia. Many schools don’t even use the word “dyslexia.” Even fewer schools are equipped to effectively tutor a child with dyslexia. In contrast, many other states (22) have legislation that recognizes dyslexia, and many of these states require schools to screen and intervene.
Currently, in California it costs a family between $13,500 and $39,500 to get a child screened for dyslexia and tutored privately. A child with dyslexia may need between 300 and 600 hours of tutoring to reach the 9th grade reading/spelling level.
Be a part of the solution. Help a child learn to read and change a life.
Dyslexia Alliance is seeking donations so that we may help people with dyslexia succeed in school and in the work world.
$5 will help us make copies of educational handouts that we can pass out at the presentations we offer to administrators, teachers, and parents.
$15 will pay for a book or video that we can give or loan to parents, teachers, and administrators.
Larger donations will help us do the following:
· Broaden our outreach services (presentations and in-service trainings)
· Offer screening services for low or no cost (a screening costs between $500 and $5,000)
· Purchase tutoring materials for parents and schools (a complete set of materials costs between $3,000 and $10,000)
· Offer tutoring services at low or no cost (private tutoring typically costs between $45 and $65/hour)
· Initiate, support, and coordinate early intervention programs at schools
What outcomes are we aiming for?
Catherine was reading at the 3rd grade level when she was 13 years old and beginning 7th grade. She was identified at that time as being moderately-to-severely dyslexic. She got the right tutoring materials and nearly 600 hours of tutoring. Catherine finished 9th grade reading at the 9th grade level. She has earned straight A’s in high school—actually a 4.05—and now as a senior, she is currently in the top 15% of her class. Her stomachaches and headaches are gone. Her self-image is vastly improved. She has a completely different future ahead of her now.
Catherine’s parents and grandparents were able to afford the screening, the materials, and the tutoring (an approximate total cost of $30,000). What about families who cannot afford this? They need our help now. And what about our schools? We can lend a helping hand to our administrators, teachers, and schools so that they can provide this kind of intervention.
