Area of Current Need: Research
We are seeking volunteers who will conduct research. We aim to learn more about the educational resources in our community. Specifically, we need information about
· Community-based organizations that offer Orton-Gillingham tutoring. We are looking for a volunteer who will study an organization’s website, visit the organization, interview staff, observe activities, and learn about the materials they use and the services they offer. Then write a short report and share orally with the Dyslexia Alliance board of directors. This volunteer must have some background in dyslexia and/or education (see below).
· Psychologists in the area who can test for dyslexia. The volunteer would gather information about the provider (education, specialty, reviews, location, availability, etc), and the volunteer would conduct a short interview with the doctor if possible. This information would be presented in both a written report and oral report to the Dyslexia Alliance board of directors. This volunteer must have some background in dyslexia and/or education (see below).
· Educational advocates in the area. The volunteer would gather information about the provider (education, specialty, reviews, location, availability, etc), and the volunteer would conduct a short interview with the advocate if possible. This information would be presented in both a written report and oral report to the Dyslexia Alliance board of directors. This volunteer must have some background in dyslexia and/or education (see below).
Who Should Apply: While this is an outstanding opportunity for a teacher or college student to further their knowledge in the field of reading and writing, we welcome anyone who has a passion to help people with dyslexia. We don’t expect volunteers to have lengthy training in dyslexia or education. If you are new to the field of dyslexia, we ask that you complete these three tasks in order to be prepared for the kind of volunteer work described above:
o Study our website. www.DyslexiaAlliance.org.
o Watch the video “Symptoms and Solutions” at http://www.dys-add.com/ (3 hours, 4 parts)
o Read the book “Overcoming Dyslexia.” (We can loan you a copy of the book.)
Even if you only have time for researching one provider—we would be immensely appreciative of your efforts!
Volunteers will be recognized on our website, in our annual report, and in other written materials. We will also supply a letter recognizing your service—great for job and school applications!
We are a growing organization looking for people who care about literacy and specifically dyslexia. Join our team!
